Community in Action: My Work with Waterloo Action.
Over the past five years, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside Waterloo Action in Ashton-under-Lyne, contributing to a range of initiatives aimed at improving our local environment and strengthening community spirit.
I’ve been proud to play a role in projects that bring people together while making a visible difference.
Taking Pride in Our Streets: Litter Picks
One of the most impactful activities over these five years has been organising and taking part in regular community litter picks. These events are about more than just clearing rubbish—they’re about building a shared sense of pride in where we live and work.
Seeing volunteers of all ages come together, equipped with litter pickers and bags has been incredibly rewarding. Over time, these efforts have helped to noticeably improve local spaces, making them cleaner, safer, and more welcoming for everyone.
Bringing the Community Together: Seasonal Events
Community spirit has also been at the heart of our seasonal events. From joyful Easter celebrations to fun-filled Halloween activities, these gatherings have created lasting memories and stronger connections between neighbours.
Our Easter events have offered crafts, games, and activities for children, while Halloween has brought creativity and excitement, with costumes, themed fun, and a real buzz across the community. Year after year, these events have grown, showing just how important they are to local families.
Educating the Next Generation: Talking to Local Scouts
A particularly meaningful part of my work has been delivering a talk on littering to a local scout group. Engaging young people in conversations about the environment is vital, and it was inspiring to see their enthusiasm.
We explored the impact of litter on wildlife and the local area, as well as simple actions they can take to help. Encouraging this mindset early on is key to creating long-term change, and it’s something I’m passionate about continuing.
Looking Ahead
Reflecting on the past five years with Waterloo Action, it’s clear that community-driven efforts can make a real difference. Whether it’s through cleaner streets, successful events, or inspiring young people, every contribution counts.
I’m proud of what we’ve achieved together and look forward to continuing this work—helping to build a cleaner, greener, and more connected Ashton, Waterloo, for years to come.
